Institute presentation

The Helsinki University Children’s Hospital is a tertiary referral centre for CHI in Finland. Surgical management of CHI in Finland is centralized to Helsinki Children’s Hospital. Prof. Otonkoski works as a Pediatric Endocrinologist at the Children’s Hospital and directs the Stem Cell Centre at Biomedicum Helsinki.
Biomedicum Helsinki, the center for medical research and training, is a leading environment that promotes medical research and training in Finland and supports cooperation between academia and industry. Future challenges in health care are met with the uniquely extensive cooperation between the university's basic biomedical research and the clinical research conducted by Helsinki University Central Hospital, as well as interaction with society at large. The top-quality facilities and research services of Biomedicum Helsinki provide an excellent framework for medical research, basic medical education, and research training across organizational boundaries.

The University of Helsinki (UHE) will participate in WP4  through the diagnostics and treatment of CHI patients. Our main tasks within the project will be to  1) conduct detailed clinical and genetic diagnostics on all Finnish CHI patients that are considered for surgical treatment  2) work closely together with the University of Turku (PET Centre) for the imaging studies  3) conduct the surgery for all Finnish CHI patients  4) participate in the development of intraoperative imaging as much as possible and 5) develop experimental models of human CHI, based on the differentiation of CHI-patient derived iPS stem cells and their transplantation in mice
